2023 is almost here and that means another glorious year of anime to look forward to. From new adaptations to popular returning series, we’ll have a ton to keep us busy all year.
Here’s our most anticipated anime of 2023 in no particular order.
Solo Leveling
The highly popular webtoon, Solo Leveling, is getting an anime adaptation and it’s set to premiere sometime in 2023. The series follows Jinwoo, a weak hunter who is tasked with protecting humans from the monsters that plague the world. He gets chosen by a mysterious power that gives him all mighty strength, turning his whole life around. A-1 Pictures, the studio behind Erased and Sword Art Online, will be taking the helm on this adaptation. Sadly, the original Illustrator DUBU passed away earlier this year after the anime announcement was made. With the high-quality team behind this production, we believe the fans will appreciate what’s to come as we see his work on screen for the first time.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
Jujutsu Kaisen broke big into mainstream anime fandom in 2020 with vividly animated dark shounen action by Studio Mappa. The world of Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) revolves around a supernatural power called Cursed Energy and Supernatural beings born from it called Curses. Jujutsu Sorcerers are special people that can use cursed energy to fight Curses that seek to harm humanity. Our protagonist Yuta Itadori is a kind hearted shounen hero who unwillingly becomes a Jujutsu Sorcerer, after accidentally becoming the bodily host of one of the most powerful and dangerous Curses ever. JJK Season 2 looks to continue the ongoing story adapting the “Kaigyoku/ Gyokusetsu" and "Shibuya Incident” story arcs from the manga. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 will air sometime in 2023. It should be available in the U.S. on Crunchyroll, and potentially additional platforms. Season 1 and the theatrical movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0 are available now on Crunchyroll.
Attack On Titan: The Final Season Part 3
In today’s world of entertainment, nothing is safe from becoming a trilogy. Not even Attack on Titan’s Final Season, which will debut Part 3 of the highly-anticipated finale in 2023. Following a dramatic character shift in Eren Yeager’s approach from being retribution-driven protagonist to genocidal maniac, we’re left with a torn and confused Armin, Mikasa, and an unlikely band of heroes who are tasked to do whatever it takes to bring Eren back down to Earth. Or else, their once-loved friend may be lost forever and the world with it. With the series having originally premiered in 2013, we’re excited for this decade-long journey to finally reach its conclusion.
Vinland Saga Season 2
Similar to the path that Attack on Titan took, Studio MAPPA has now been handed the torch from Studio WIT to animate this epic Viking saga. Season 2 seems set to explore the continued development of Thorsfinn’s character from utterly devastated and vengeful child, to lost and searching adolescent who no longer has a purpose to their life. While details are currently scarce, the first two official trailers for Vinland Saga Season 2 show that several new acquaintances will play a pivotal role in the upcoming trials and tribulations which Thorsfinn must undertake. With clear hints of the legendary Vinland also being on the horizon, we’re intrigued to see just how far Thorsfinn will go in his journey. Mark your calendars as Vinland Saga Season 2 will premiere on January 9, 2023 with a slated 24 episodes planned for this season.
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2
Studio Bind returns to animate the second season of the successfully popular anime Mushoki Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. The story continues to follow a 34-year-old Japanese man reincarnated in a different world as the magically adept Rudeus Greyrat. In Season 2, Rudeus is now a teenager attending school at the Ranoa University of Magic. Coming to terms with loss and a newfound perspective of knowledge in the world he now lives in, viewers can expect familiar faces to make a return, as well as a pivotal turning point in the series.
Jobless Reincarnation's successful first season was widely acclaimed for its drastically different approach to an isekai series. Manabu Okamoto will be the lead director for Season 2, known for his work on Darling in the Franxx, Akame ga Kill!, and Re: Zero, Starting Life in Another World. A date has yet to be announced, but Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 will release sometime in 2023.
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a
The hit 2017 action RPG NieR: Automata is finally getting an anime adaptation. Critically acclaimed A-1 Pictures, known for Sword Art Online and 86, will be animating the series set in the same time of war as the game where man-made androids fight against alien machines.
Although not much is known about the series, it’s confirmed that Yui Ishikawa (the voice of Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan) will play 2B, Natsuki Hanae (the voice of Tanjiro from Demon Slayer) will play 9S, and Hiroki Yasumoto ( the voice of Yasutora Sado from Bleach) will play Pod 042. NieR: Automata VER 1.1A is scheduled to release sometime in January 2023.
The Ancient Magus Bride Season 2
It's been five years since the critically acclaimed supernatural anime Ancient Magus Bride was released with 24 episodes and Studio Kafka, which animated the OVA The Ancient Magus' Bride: The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm, will return to animate Season 2. Winner of “Best Drama” by Cruncyroll in 2017, Ancient Magus Bride will continue the story of Chise Katori abandoned as a child only to endure hardship due to her ability to see frightening supernatural creatures. Driven mad by her hardships, Chise sells herself to a slave market, only to be bought by a mysterious magus beast known as Elias Ainsworth who takes her in not only as his apprentice but also as his bride. Learning more about her extraordinary powerful affinity to magical energies, Chise will discover that there is more to her life than suffering and fear.
Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2 is scheduled to release sometime April 2023.
Trigun Stampede
The original Trigun was a classic late ‘90s sci-fi space Western taking place on a desert planet literally called No Man's Land. The protagonist, Vash the Stampede, isn't your typical strong and stoic gunslinger. Rather he's a quirky and goofy guy with a hyperactive pacifist streak. The story explores Vash's journey to uncover his amnesiac past, battle the mysterious group hunting him, and discover why he has a 60 Billion Double Dollar bounty on his head. Trigun Stampede is a reboot of this classic that is doing more than just getting enhanced visuals going from 2D to 3D animation. Studio Orange is updating the character designs, introducing new characters, and diving deeper into the Trigun Universe beyond the original adaptation. Trigun Stampede will be on Crunchyroll in the U.S. in January 2023.
